The Crayon art

In the past the artists were very sceptical to the manufactured crayons. It is quite understandable because in many cases these crayons did not fulfil their demands for the colour stability. The crayons are in general manufactured in the same way as the graphite pencils. The difference is that their leads are not fired because the pigment would be destroyed. Instead of graphite and clay we find colour pigments, fillers (chalk, kaolin) and resin in the mixture.

Even with drawing with crayons you can reach many different effects. If you use them without solvent, they are distinguished with certain softness, which appears thanks to the granule of the paper. Shadowing and combination of different colour – the most significant character of crayons is the possibility of soft optical mixing of colours. It is clear that the colours are not mixed before the application on the base, but they are mixed on the paper where lateral shadowing or repainting in order to achieve the tone we want.
